The Benefits of Calvary: Grace, Counsel, & Glory

by Ernie on August 27, 2010

Who can number the redemptive benefits of Calvary? The removal of our sin and the gift of Christ’s righteousness would be more than sufficient to fill eternity with the praise of redeemed sinners. God’s gifts and mercies are so diverse and manifold that eternity, and certainly a few blog posts, are insufficient to tell them all. As we wrap up a week of considering some of the benefits of the cross, let’s finish with three mentioned in the Psalms.

“The LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”—Psalm 84:11Psalm 84:11
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

“Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.”—Psalm 73:24Psalm 73:24
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

Calvary has purchased for the believer a life supported and strengthened by God’s grace. Again and again in Holy Scripture, and certainly in our own lives, we come across the truth that unless God builds and keeps the house of our physical and spiritual prosperity all will come to ruin (Psalm 127:1Psalm 127:1
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

127 A Song of degrees for Solomon. for...: or, of Solomon 1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. that...: Heb. that are builders of it in it

). God’s grace preserved us in our mother’s womb, spared our lives when we were yet without Christ, gave us the salvation and righteousness of Jesus, and is the foundation for every good thing we enjoy. His merciful grace is new every morning in the preservation of our spiritual and physical frame. How endless are the supplies He gives to His needy children!

Calvary has purchased for the believer a life directed by the counsel of God. Our salvation, accomplished on Calvary and applied in our regeneration, has drastically changed our source of wisdom. As believers, we now pant for the instruction and guiding of our faithful Heavenly Father. In His Word, He pours forth the counsel of a loving and reconciled God. The riches of that Book are so many there is no accumulation of life experiences that can exhaust its depth and resourcefulness. This wonderful resource has been there all along, but in our conversion we now gain eyes to see it and a heart to receive it. God’s Word has governed great men and small men, nations and individuals. Our Christian heritage is one huge vindication of the rich counsels of God’s Word.

Calvary has purchased for the believer a life that culminates in glory. Christ’s love is no fake. Like the true and sincere groom, He will have His bride to be with Him. He will have His people to be free from what oppresses them most. So loving and true is the care of Jesus, that He will remove our greatest burden, sin, and give us our greatest desire—the unending enjoyment of Him to all eternity. Man’s love changes, and has often proved treacherous, but the love of Christ accomplishes every bit what it intends! Praise God! Calvary’s benefits will ultimately result in an eternal arena of praise where, without sin, we can explore these benefits in their fullness forever.
